Uber has faced several major legal and court cases in Australia, notably the $271.8 million taxi class action settlement,
and $81 million payroll tax dispute heading to the High Court, and landmark Fair Work Commission deactivation rulings.
As of April 2026, there have been several recent reports of rideshare drivers being charged with rape and sexual assault, including multiple counts of these serious offences.
August 18, 2025, it was reported that Uber alone had 400,000 sexual assault and misconduct complaints. However, in a biennial safety report released on that same day, covering the years 2017 to 2022, Uber disclosed only 12,522 of these incidents. This is truly concerning.
Uber addressed 3,824 incidents of severe sexual assault and misconduct. Additionally, they reinstated two known sexual predators with back pay.

Onur Dedeoglu,
Onur Dedeoglu, a former Sydney Uber driver, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison with a minimum non-parole period of six years for the August 2018 sexual assault of a 17-year-old female passenger in North Bondi.
Case Details

The Incident: In August 2018, Dedeoglu picked up the victim and two friends in Sydney's CBD after a night out. After dropping off her friends in Bondi, he drove the remaining 17-year-old into a secluded car park, deactivated his app, climbed into the back seat, and assaulted her while she was asleep or incapacitated.

The Verdict: Dedeoglu was found guilty in the Downing Centre District Court of one count of sexual intercourse without consent and two counts of assault with an act of indecency. Judge Nicole Noman presided over the trial and sentencing.

Aftermath: Uber immediately removed the driver's access to the application upon being notified of the incident in 2018.

Legal reports noted that Dedeoglu faced likely deportation to Turkey following the completion of his prison sentence.

Francesco De Luise, 59,
was arrested last month and charged with 10 sexual assault offences and one count of rape. The charges involve three women over the past 18 months, one of whom secretly filmed part of her alleged attack inside his vehicle.
De Luise was denied bail at a hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, after police investigators warned his alleged conduct had become “more brazen and blatant”.
Senior Constable Catherine Poole, of the Box Hill sexual offences and child abuse investigation team, told the court that De Luise stopped outside the Public House in Richmond on September 3 and picked up a woman whose partner had ordered an Uber.
The father-of-three allegedly groped the young woman and said: “ You don’t care, do you? You got in the car”.
“The complainant was petrified and tried to pull her legs together and move away,” Poole said.
On June 13, a woman leaving a music festival in Southbank accepted a ride from De Luise, believing he was an Uber driver. He is alleged to have fondled her thigh and began masturbating in front of the woman, who said: “Stop, I feel really uncomfortable and I want to get out of the car”.
The woman escaped near the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets. She took a photo of De Luise’s registration plates as he drove off.

Benjamin Willem Pereira, 29
A rideshare driver accused of stalking, rape and coercive control started his own driving company just days before fronting court for the charges.
Benjamin Willem Pereira, 29, of Ferny Hills stands accused of abusing two women he had picked up when driving for a rideshare company, and a third who he was in an earlier relationship with.
Pereira registered his private driving company, Transportation Me – offering packages worth as much as $800, according to its website – on November 28, 2025, three days before his first court appearance over the charges.
The website features cartoon images of the same model of Mercedes-Benz hot hatch Pereira was accused of driving when he allegedly committed the offences.
A 21-year-old woman told police she exchanged social media details with a rideshare driver in a white Mercedes-Benz A45 on November 1, 2024. Later, Pereira allegedly sent her messages and threatened to attend her workplace.
She said she never met with the driver again before she reported his alleged behaviour to the police.
About six months later, a 27-year-old woman started a relationship with Pereira, police said.
He allegedly accessed her phone and threatened to assault her. When she attempted to cut the relationship off in July 2025, police allege he attended her house and sexually assaulted her.
